In 728 BCE, the Kushite king Piankhi marched north from Nubia, conquered every city along the Nile, and took Egypt — becoming Pharaoh of both kingdoms. He arrived not as a barbarian but as a champion of Egyptian religion, appalled at how poorly the northern rulers were maintaining the temples of Amun. He restored the temples, observed Egyptian ritual with meticulous precision, and governed the combined empire. He considered himself more Egyptian than the Egyptians.
