At its height, Meroe was the iron-working capital of Africa — its slag heaps still marking the landscape of Sudan, supplying iron tools and weapons across sub-Saharan Africa for centuries. Sudan has over 200 pyramids — more than Egypt. The city had its own script, Meroitic, still only partially deciphered. A civilization that produced iron, pyramids, an original writing system, and warrior queens — almost entirely absent from Western history books.
