Collection: The Wandjina — Spirit Beings of the Sky
They have large oval heads, enormous eyes, no mouths, and halos that suggest cloud and lightning. The Wandjina are the cloud and rain spirits of the Kimberley region of Western Australia — the most powerful supernatural beings in the Ngarinyin, Worrorra, and Wunambal traditions, responsible for bringing the wet season rains that make life in the Kimberley possible. Their images appear on cave walls across the Kimberley, some of them maintained and repainted by initiated men for thousands of years. The Wandjina do not have mouths because they do not need to speak — they communicate through the weather itself, through the lightning and the rain that determine whether life continues.
These signs carry the silent face of the Wandjina, the cloud halo, the lightning symbol, and the rain that speaks when words cannot.
