The Oracle at Delphi — Navel of the World

Kings and generals crossed seas to sit before the Pythia — the oracle of Apollo at Delphi — and receive answers that could determine whether empires rose or fell. The oracle never lied. She spoke in riddles that were always, in retrospect, precisely correct. Croesus was told that if he crossed the river he would destroy a great empire. He crossed. He destroyed his own. Delphi was the center of the Greek world — the omphalos, the navel stone, the place where the divine and human worlds touched.
