The Roman legion was the most effective military machine the ancient world ever produced. Ten thousand men moving as a single organism, building their own roads and forts as they advanced, capable of fighting in any terrain against any opponent, bound together by an oath to the standards that they would die rather than surrender. The eagle standard — the aquila — was the soul of the legion. To lose it in battle was the greatest shame imaginable. To recover it, the Romans would march to the ends of the earth.
