The Fifth Sun — Aztec Calendar Stone

We live in the Fifth Sun. The first four suns were destroyed — by jaguar, by wind, by rain of fire, by flood. Each time, the gods rebuilt the world. The Aztec Sun Stone — often called the calendar stone — is not a calendar. It is a cosmological map showing all five suns, the 20 day signs of the sacred calendar, and the face of Tonatiuh at the center, tongue extended to drink the blood that keeps the cosmos alive. It is one of the most complex and beautiful objects ever made by human hands.
