Collection: Suleiman the Magnificent — The Lawgiver

His own people called him the Lawgiver. Europeans called him the Magnificent. During his 46-year reign, the Ottoman Empire reached its greatest extent — stretching from Budapest to Basra, from Algeria to Azerbaijan. He personally led thirteen military campaigns. He built the Süleymaniye Mosque, reformed the legal system, patronized the greatest poets and architects of the age, and corresponded with the kings of Europe as equals. He wore his power lightly. When he died on campaign in Hungary, his army was told to keep marching for three days before learning their sultan was gone, so the news would not break their formation.

These signs carry the Suleiman tughra, the imperial seal, the Süleymaniye dome, and the sword of the lawgiver.
