Collection: Songlines — Maps Written in Music

Every Ancestor Being who walked the continent in the Dreamtime left behind a track — a Songline — that encodes the geography, the spiritual significance, the ecological knowledge, and the law of that route in musical form. To travel across Country, you sing. Each verse of the song describes the next feature of the landscape — the next waterhole, the next significant rock, the next place where ceremony must be performed. An Aboriginal elder with the right Songlines could navigate thousands of kilometers of desert they had never physically visited, guided entirely by the songs they had memorized. It is the most sophisticated navigation system ever developed — and it works.

These signs carry the Songline path, the musical note as map, the crossing tracks of Ancestor Beings, and the knowledge that can fit inside a song.
