Kukulkan — The Feathered Serpent of the Maya

At the spring and autumn equinoxes, something extraordinary happens at Chichen Itza. The late afternoon sun casts a shadow on the north staircase of El Castillo pyramid that creates the illusion of a great serpent descending the steps — its feathered head carved in stone at the base. This is Kukulkan, the Maya Feathered Serpent, descending from the heavens to earth.
