Inkosi — The Zulu Chieftaincy

The Inkosi is not merely a chief. In Zulu political philosophy, the Inkosi governs not through force but through the consent and counsel of the people — holding court each morning under a tree where any member of the community can bring a dispute, a grievance, or simply news. The great kraal of the Inkosi is the center of social, political, and spiritual life. The royal cattle are sacred. The women of the royal house are political actors. And the Inkosi answers to the amadlozi — the ancestral spirits — as much as to any living authority. It is governance rooted in accountability to both the living and the dead.
