Inanna — Queen of Heaven and Earth

She descended into the underworld through seven gates, surrendering a garment and ornament at each gate until she stood naked before her sister Ereshkigal, who killed her with a glance. She hung on a hook for three days. Then her servants, made from the dirt under the divine fingernails of Enki, restored her with the food and water of life, and she rose. Inanna — the Sumerian goddess of love, war, justice, and political power — is the oldest fully developed goddess in human history. Her hymns, written by the world's first known author (the priestess Enheduana, daughter of Sargon of Akkad), are 4,300 years old and contain poetry as powerful as anything written since. She is the original queen, the first goddess to hold every domain of human life simultaneously.
